The CERF facility

The CERN-EU high-energy Reference Field (CERF) facility provides a reference neutron field of characteristics similar to the field encountered at commercial flight altitudes (10 - 20 km), produced by cosmic rays interacting with the atmosphere. CERF provides a reference base for testing, intercomparing and calibrating passive and active instruments before their use on-board aircraft and in space.
